About Maloba
Thriving off complete self-sustainability, Maloba harnesses nature’s power at every turn, drawing energy from the African sun and tapping into water from the very bowels of the earth. There’s no room for waste here; everything is carefully considered, dictated by the extremes of the environment to what is available in the area. The task of creating an organic and fully sustainable garden in the semi-desert is no small feat, but true to the Perridon pioneering spirit, the challenge was embraced, and over three hectares of the iron-rich soil has been transformed into a fertile oasis. From channeling the winds to cool the greenhouses to using the locally hewn dolerite rock to insulate the livestock coops, every detail is designed with conservation in mind (even the battery bank is housed in its own smart, air-conditioned lodging). Hardy Bonsmara cattle and fat tailed sheep roam freely, while a generous dam becomes a playground to the geese and chickens. And if that’s not enough, the aptly named ‘Great White’ pigs wallow in their own en-suite pools during the heat of summer, adding yet another touch of ‘Maloba magic’.
A taste of the Farm
Based on the layout of the historic 1562 Dutch Company’s Garden in Cape Town, the farm gardens yield seasonal fruits and vegetables year-round. As the gardens grow and develop, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the surroundings and hand-pick fresh ingredients to savor with their meals. Grown directly from the land, every dish reflects Maloba farm’s rich diversity and freshness. Beyond simply experiencing the farmstead, this culinary journey takes you closer to the origins of your food, celebrating the harmony between nature and nourishment. From the finest cut of beef, the freshest of milk, to free-range eggs, savor the true essence of farm-to-fork dining, crafted with care and authenticity the Maloba way.
Celebrating our livestock
Our livestock is the beating heart of farm life at Maloba. They roam freely, living off the land in a harmonious balance with nature, and they are happy. From the resilient Bonsmara cattle, renowned for their high-quality beef and ability to withstand disease, to the curious Jersey milking cows and the famously fragrant fat tailed Karoo lamb, each animal plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy biosphere. Glossy Rhode Island Red chickens assist the gardeners by keeping pesky slugs at bay, while the pigs enjoy a menu of organic scraps and fresh veggies from the gardens (did we mention, there’s no waste at Maloba?). These animals embody the very essence of sustainable farming, enriching the farm’s ecosystem. Their presence reflects our unwavering commitment to nature’s balance, ensuring a thriving environment for generations to come.
Horseback Riding
From the gardens, take a leisurely stroll down a winding path to Maloba’s centerpiece – the stables—so beautifully appointed, you might be tempted to stay there yourself. Home to six majestic horses with top-notch tack, these stables offer experienced riders an exclusive opportunity to embark on a horseback safari through the reserve—a rare privilege – and experience nature in its rawest form.
If galloping in the wild isn’t your thing, why not opt for a peaceful sunset ride in a quieter corner of the reserve? Here, you can soak in the serene expanse and enjoy the tranquillity of nature’s embrace.
