AUGUST 2025 AT MALOBA

Maloba Private Game Reserve

AUGUST 2025 AT MALOBA

August arrived with cold mornings and clear blue skies. The yellow tones from July are still visible, but the air felt different, lighter, with a quiet sense of change. The days began to become a little longer, and there was a bit of warmth in the afternoons.

Much of this month was spent out searching for ostrich nests, scanning the open plains for those well-hidden eggs in the field. Following tracks, reading the signs, and hoping for a glimpse of those huge, perfectly round eggs.

We also had a special visit from VulPro this month, who came to monitor our vulture nests. It is inspiring to see their dedication in action. This year, we have fourteen active White-backed Vulture nests, a remarkable sight and a hopeful sign for a species now considered critically endangered. Watching these birds fly above the Maloba landscape, and settling carefully into their nests, reminds us how important these safe breeding spaces are.

And just as we thought the dry season would continue, the skies surprised us. By mid to late August, the rain appeared in cloud bursts, which was much needed. The bush seemed to breathe again. Within days, the green began to appear.

August closed with that wonderful sense of renewal, a reminder of how quickly the landscape of Maloba shifts, and how much life it holds, even in the heart of the dry season.
